Fergie's sat-nav disaster
09 December 2008
We’ve come up with some essential tips to help you sell safely.
Police sold the Duchess of York’s Jaguar XJ6 for £12,000 at an auction last month but forgot to wipe the sat-nav’s memory, it was reported.
The sat-nav contained the addresses of Fergie’s house in Surrey, and the home of Princess Beatrice’s 25-year-old boyfriend, Dave Clark.
It also showed the route to and from London’s Boujis nightclub to the Princesses home.
New owner Steven Coulson said, “The royals can thank their lucky stars the car was bought by me. I’ll just delete the addresses.”

How to sell safely
• If you include a sat-nav as part of the sale, make sure the internal memory has been cleared first – refer to the instruction manual for details
• Always check your car before arranging a viewing with a buyer. A quick maintenance check could identify any problems before a sale
• Remove your credit card details from the service history records - you may also want to remove other personal details such as your address and contact numbers
• Remove all personal items from your car, including receipts, notes and cards
• Opt for Telesafe when selling a car with Auto Trader – this free service will block all known canvassers from contacting you
• Allow the buyer to check your car and take a test drive - make sure they're insured and avoid letting them go alone. Ask a friend or relative to accompany you
• Try and receive payment in a bank so you can pay it in straight away and the cashier can check for fake notes
• Fill out the slip at the bottom of the V5C registration document (or ‘logbook’) and send it to the DVLA, informing them of a change in owner. Hand over any other car manuals and write a receipt for you and the buyer
