Car Videos: James Bond’s battered Aston Martin

Car Videos: James Bond’s battered Aston Martin - News image

30 April 2008

Welcome to Adrian Hearn’s Car Videos of the Week.

We’ve been trawling the web for some great motoring clips, from the funny to the plain unbelievable.

This is what we found…

James Bond’s crashed Aston Martin DBS

Last week we revealed how the driver of one of James Bond’s Aston Martin DBS’s lost control of the British sports car in awkward conditions, plunging into Lake Garda in Italy.

The driver miraculously escaped the crash with just minor injuries, despite careering through a barrier and off a cliff into the lake – which in some places is more than 300 metres deep.

Our photo showed the Aston Martin DBS – which will be driven by Daniel Craig’s spy character in the Quantum of Solace – being fished out of the lake by a huge crane and support team.

The footage captured by an onlooker shows the Aston Martin DBS – which also featured in Craig’s debut as 007 in the 2006 blockbuster Casino Royale – practically flattened at the front with only the smallest space available for the driver to escape from the sinking vehicle.

It’s been a tricky time filming the 22nd Bond film with three major crashes happening in the space of a week.

A stuntman was seriously injured when the Alfa Romeo he was driving was involved in collision on the SAME road.

The original BMW M1

Petrolheads around the globe got all hot round the collar on Monday when details of a BMW M1 Homage were announced.

The BMW M1 Homage concept was unveiled at an Italian hotel to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original M1 – BMW’s only mid-engined supercar.

Plans for the original BMW M1 began in 1975 as the German car maker wanted to build a supercar to take on those from the Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche factories.

Unveiled in 1978, the BMW M1’s 3.5-litre engine accelerated the sports car from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 162mph.

And with all BMWs limited to 155mph, this makes the M1 faster than any of the current crop of Bavarian cars.

Check out this homage to the original BMW M1.
