Find out about car cloning now

19 March 2008

‘Car cloning’ is where criminals give a stolen car the identity of an existing, legitimate vehicle by using false number plates.

If you buy a cloned car you won’t legally own it - and you’ll lose your money.
There are many steps you can take to avoid buying a cloned car:
  • Ensure you get the seller’s landline number - not just their mobile number.
  • Make sure you see the vehicle at the dealer’s/private seller’s address - not in a car park, outside a pub or in a lay-by.
  • Make sure the details on the vehicle registration certificate match up to the person you’re buying the vehicle from, and make sure you see some ID.
  • Don’t pay cash for the car - criminals selling cloned vehicles will rarely take a bankers' draft.
  • If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is - walk away.
