And the world's smallest car is...
26 June 2009
Vijay Pattni talks to Perry Watkins – creator of the world’s smallest car – for this week’s Weird World of Wheels special.
“I used to build robots out of cardboard boxes as a kid. I then moved on to bikes, mopeds…”
And now this – officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, is his latest creation: the world’s smallest car.
A man who spends his days as a sales director working for Timpsons (the key cutting and shoe repair chain) has created ‘Wind-Up’.
“I looked at the Peel P50 as the world’s smallest car and thought, ‘I could easily beat that’”, explains Perry.
“I was looking for something original to build – something with a bit of a novelty factor.”
And that novelty factor came in the form of dear old Postman Pat and his black-and-white cat. Or more importantly, his distinctive red van…
Performing a car-jacking worthy of Grand Theft Auto, Perry deposed Pat from his van and set about making his masterpiece.
“I got the Postman Pat children’s ride you see at supermarkets”, explains Perry. “It saved a massive amount of work because the body had already been built.”
Using a quad bike with a 150cc engine, Perry reworked Pat’s van to fit over the bike and modded it to be half the size of the Peel P50.
“It’s 41 inches tall, 51 inches long and 26 inches wide – in cubic feet, it’s half the size of the Peel, and will hit a top speed of 40mph.”
Only problem then, is getting inside it. “I kind of fit inside – didn’t you see my picture on Top Gear last week? If I tilt my head out of the window I can fit…
“People just stare at me in disbelief.”
But the most important question on everyone’s lips – what has he done with Pat?
“Pat now sits on the grill of my campervan.”
Rumour has it he’s working on another top secret project which involves an automotive record…stick with us to hear the latest.
In the meantime – check out the world’s smallest car and his ‘Flatmobile’.
