Amazing military vehicles - Feature Image
This humungous Russian tank concept from World War 1 never saw active service

20 March 2008

Welcome to the Weird World of Wheels, our weekly round-up of the strangest motoring-related news from around the planet.

This week, we look at your options if you need a car with a little more oomph…

Tsar tank

This humungous Russian tank concept from World War 1 had two huge and impractical wheels at the front, but never saw active service as its rear wheels kept getting stuck in the mud.

Back to the drawing board.

Limited Edition Military Touareg

You may remember the meaty Military Touareg from a previous edition of the Weird World of Wheels, but it’s so mouth-watering it deserves a second outing.

You have to admit, it would make the weekly shop a bit more interesting.

The world’s ugliest military vehicle?

Described by its seller as “quite possibly one of the ugliest purpose-built trucks I've ever come across”, this 1955 Saurer M-4, made for the Swiss military, was recently offered for sale for $15,000.

It has to be one of the ugliest vehicles we’ve ever seen, let alone a military one.

And that’s saying something – take a look at the car in this edition of the Weird World of Wheels.

Video: Russian corkscrew tank

This crazy Russian tank (a completely different kind to the tank Trackside’s Keith Collantine got to spend the day in) was designed in the 70s using Archimedes’ screw propulsion system. The suspension’s not very forgiving, though. It doesn’t have any.

Video: Force field

Don’t expect to see this appearing as standard on any 5-door saloons anytime soon, but this military vehicle defensive ‘force field’ is pretty amazing.
