A feline hitch-hiker, Detroit takes to the screen…and the worst snow in 18 years? Vijay Pattni rounds up the weirdest motoring stories in this week’s Weird World of Wheels.

Snow, snow, everywhere, and all the cars did slide; snow, snow, everywhere, and all the cars did hide…

‘Snow joke guv

Excuse the butchery of a classic English poem (The Rime of The Ancient Mariner…go look it up), but the weather this week was nothing short of biblical.

The UK fell under Jack Frost’s spell as the worst snow storm in 18 years forced schools to close, roads to block – and cars to suffer.

But as the snow laid waste to the country’s already weakened economy – with some experts estimating the snow to cost upwards of £2 billion – there was something majestic about a blanket of pure white snow covering the cities and countryside.

And we got out with our camera to capture some of the breathtaking sights witnessed by Londoners…

Fancy a lift?

From last November’s miracle story about a one-year-old puppy – hit so hard it got stuck in a car bumper for 15 miles and survived – to a cat who hitched the wrong kind of ride…

A short-haired tabby (pictured above) was found on Wednesday this week after arriving at a carpet store in Norfolk – stuck underneath a lorry.

Staff at the carpet store reportedly heard cries and found the mile-munching moggy crouched in a space between the vehicle’s air brake and axle.

After travelling more than 40 miles across two counties – she is believed to have hitched a ride from Essex – the cat was unhurt.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “The cat was unharmed but I had to tempt her out of her hiding place with cat biscuits. She was covered in dirt and oil.”

Motown to Movie-town?

Detroit could soon be the new home for the US film industry if Michigan lawmakers have their way.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm this week announced Wonderstruck Animation Studios will invest $86 million to build a new studio in Detroit, and Motown Motion Pictures is set to invest $54 million to build their new film studios at a former GM plant in Pontiac.

In fact, production of new Clint Eastwood film Gran Torino was moved from Minnesota to Michigan, while 2007’s blockbusting film Transformers was partly filmed in Detroit.

Is “Motor-wood” set to replace Hollywood? Answers on a postcard please…
