Lambo: it's not orange

Cars get themselves into the strangest places…Vijay Pattni is your host for this week’s Weird World of Wheels.

Everyone wants a supercar, and why not? They’re loud, unashamedly brash, a little bit vulgar, ridiculously fast, beautiful and reserved for the highest echelons of humankind. Or just footballers.

But some people’s fascination with supercars goes one step further. Television presenter and madcap car designer Leepu – from Discovery Channel’s Chop Shop – was so enamoured with Lamborghini he built one himself.

And Ken Imhoff who hails from the good ol’ U S of A decided he would build himself a Lamborghini. From scratch. In his basement.

Now, we’re not ones to mock his craftsmanship, because I’m sure you’ll agree from the pictures, he’s done an absolutely fantastic job. In fact, the replica Lamborghini Countach he’s built looks superb.

But perhaps he should have exercised a little bit of foresight. Because having spent a whopping TEN years building his masterpiece, he soon realised there was one problem staring him in the face.

He couldn’t get it out of the basement.

Cue frantic calls to a few builders. Cue much embarrassment as his pride and joy has to be hoisted out after a digger smashes a hole through into his basement.

Never one to be ‘dumped’ into a pit of a situation, Ken built a ramp and hired a digger to excavate his precious metal – even ripping apart some of the foundations for his house.

“I was like an expectant father watching it come through the wall”, says Ken, with no hint of humour. “I was literally shaking.

“The neighbours started gathering around as it emerged, waiting for me to remove the blankets. It was like an artist unwrapping his masterpiece. I had never seen it in the light of day either.

“As the last blanket and car cover were removed I knew at that moment I had accomplished what I had dreamed about so many years ago and to see it sitting there in front of me was surreal.

“The whole process took two and a half hours and there it was, my Lamborghini safely in the garage. The next day we filled the hole in the basement and in no time it was good as new.”

But his is not the only car stranded in a strange situation – we’ve got a whole gallery of motors making a mockery of the term ‘fit for use on the public highway’.
