18 April 2008

Welcome to the Weird World of Wheels, our weekly round-up of the strangest motoring-related news from around the planet.

This week, the most eye-opening special edition cars ever created.

The Who VW Transporter

Featuring a Union flag on the roof and the band’s likenesses plastered on the side, this special edition Who-themed Volkswagen Transporter is the prize in a competition which will benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Visitors to the competition page are able to download a previously unreleased live performance of ‘The Magic Bus’ by The Who, and for a £5 entry fee could be in with a chance of driving away this unique piece of memorabilia.

Renault Clio Williams

As featured in this edition of Look at the Wheels on That, the Renault Clio Williams was created in 1993 when the French manufacturers turned to its own motorsport division, Renaultsport, to turn out this stunning hot hatch.

The 2-litre 16 valve engine churned out 150bhp to the car's front wheels. Not bad for a car which previously sported 1.2 and 1.4-litre engines.

Only 400 Renault Clio Williams were ever made, but the subsequent Williams 2 and Williams 3 models are far more common.

Police Lotus Exige

This 140mph Lotus Exige was created by Sussex Police in an attempt to get young drivers to talk to them - so they can drive home the dangers of reckless driving.

Sergeant Paul Masterton said: "Many places in Sussex have a problem with youths speeding around, with their stereos blaring, making a general nuisance of themselves.

"When we pull up in this Lotus, however, it’s usually them that are approaching us to have a look at the car!"

“The Dude” edition Dodge truck

Unleashed on the American public in 1969, the "Dude Sport Trim Package" Dodge D100 added a 'Dodge Dude' decal, a black or white body-side ‘C’ stripe decal to the standard edition.

Only 1,500 to 2,000 of the vehicles were ever produced.

Harlequin Edition VW Golf

Looking like a 90s student disco, this 1996 'Harlequin' edition Volkswagen Golf is slightly less easy on the eye than the new special edition 152mph VW Golf GTI Pirelli, but still makes Golf enthusiasts shed a tear.

At the time of the car's unveiling, the official VW magazine said: "Can’t decide on a color? Try a Harlequin Golf."
