£100,000 Porsche gets stuck in a lift

Vijay Pattni is your host for this week’s Weird World of Wheels.
Porsches – you gotta’ love ‘em.
Renowned across the globe as the benchmark for sportscar brilliance, they are admired and thrashed in equal measure.
Take the famous Porsche 911 for instance. A fabulous small sports coupe, the 911 grew up from humble beginnings into the rear-engined monster you see today.
Yes – rear-engined. Mistreat a Porsche 911 around a bend and you will end up climbing the nearest tree – backwards. Unless you’re The Stig, or just very lucky.
Going up?
Thankfully, Porsche decided to take the 911, stretch it and stick the engine up front to create the four-door Panamera. But even that didn’t stop it from getting into a bit of a pickle.
At the 2009 Shanghai motor show, Porsche were perplexed – how to transport their new prized model to the 94th floor of the exhibition?
Simple – stick it in a lift.
Workers strapped the new machine onto a pallet, bundled it into a lift and transported it up the third largest building in the world.
Only pictures can do this story justice – we’re particularly fond of the Chinese guard standing nonplussed while a £100,000 Porker sits upright in a lift next to him.

Next time you see a farmer tending his plot, give him a thorough salute – for he may be growing the next racing superstar.
Far from cloning Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button (it may yet happen), Warwick University has come up with a novel idea of upping the green credentials of a notoriously carbon-heavy motorsport by building an F3 car from vegetables.
No, we’re not kidding, and yes, it does beggar belief.
The WorldFirst F3 car has been built using potatoes, carrots, ‘other vegetables’ and recyclable materials.
But if you think “yeah right – it’s probably got a dirty V8 underneath”, you’re wrong. Underneath the hippy exterior is a 2-litre diesel engine which has been tuned to run on chocolate and vegetable oil.
