Lewis Hamilton's race of destiny

Lewis Hamilton's race of destiny - Hamilton

31 October 2008

Lewis Hamilton can become Britain’s first F1 world champion in 12 years this weekend.

Trackside’s Keith Collantine is your guide to the most important F1 race of the year.

The title contenders: Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa profiled

How can Hamilton win the championship?

Lewis Hamilton has 94 points to Felipe Massa’s 87. Points in F1 are scored for the top eight places: 10 for a win, then 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1.

Hamilton will be champion if he finishes in the top five, regardless of how Massa does.

If Hamilton finishes sixth or seventh, he will be champion if Massa doesn’t win. And if Hamilton finishes eighth or lower, he will be champion if Massa doesn’t finish in the top two.

Where are they racing?

The Brazilian Grand Prix is held at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Sao Paulo. It’s Felipe Massa’s home track, so Hamilton’s title rival will have huge support from the F1-mad home crowd.

Here’s a diagram of the circuit:

What’s the weather going to be like?

Early forecasts suggest the racing could be affected by rain.

Hamilton has won two races in the wet this year – at Monaco and Silverstone – while Ferrari has struggled in rainy conditions.

Even if it doesn’t rain, the Brazilian circuit often provides unpredictability and excitement. It should be a stunning end to the season.

What about David Coulthard?

The Scottish star signs off this weekend with his final F1 race. He’s started 246 races in a career stretching back to 1994.

In that time he’s won 13 times including two victories in the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix and two home wins at Silverstone.

He will race with a special livery on his Red Bull car this weekend.
