Lewis Hamilton’s F1 showdown: complete guide

Lewis Hamilton’s F1 showdown: complete guide - Feature Image

19 October 2007

Lewis Hamilton is on the verge of becoming the first rookie ever to win the Formula 1 world championship.

Keith Collantine has everything you need to know about the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Where does Lewis Hamilton need to finish to win the championship?

If he wins or finishes second, he’s champion regardless of what the others do.

The Briton can still win the title if he finishes lower down the order – but it will depend where his rivals finish – see below for the details in full.

Who else can win the championship?

Fernando Alonso, champion of the last two years and Hamilton’s team mate at McLaren, is still in the running. If Hamilton wins the championship he will make Alonso’s record for being the youngest ever champion.

Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari is also in the running, but his Ferrari team mate Felipe Massa is not, so expect Massa to do what he can to help Raikkonen.

Where can I watch it?

Qualifying is on ITV4 on Saturday from 4.30-6.30pm – a nice warm-up before the rugby world cup final!

The race is on ITV1 on Sunday from 4-7pm.

What’s the history between Hamilton and Alonso?

The McLaren duo are at war. Alonso has complained that the team should give him, as champion, preferential treatment over Hamilton.

Now Alonso believes the team are giving Hamilton preferential treatment and a steward will be stationed in the McLaren pit this weekend to guarantee fair play. McLaren insists both their drivers are given equal treatment.

Both drivers have said they would rather not be team mates next year, and Alonso has been linked with a return to former team Renault.

Where has Hamilton come from?

Hamilton has set the F1 world on fire this year. He’s had McLaren support for several years and won junior categories in the last two seasons – European Formula Three in 2005, and GP2 last year.

He began his F1 career with a record nine consecutive podiums and has won four times this year. He’s been in the lead of the title race since May.

How the championship will be decided:

Current points standings:

Lewis Hamilton 107
Fernando Alonso 103
Kimi Raikkonen 100

Ten points are awarded for first place, eight for second, then 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 for eighth.

If Alonso wins and Hamilton finishes third they will tie on points but Alonso will be champion having won more races this year.

If Alonso finishes second and Hamilton fifth they will tie on points and also have the same number of first, second, third and fourth place finishes this year. Hamilton will be champion having had more fifth place finishes.

What’s the track like?

The Autódromo José Carlos Pace in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has hosted F1 races for over 30 years. It mixes fast and slow corners and is popular among the drivers.

It sits in a natural bowl surrounded by hundreds of thousands of F1’s most passionate fans.

But there has been one major change for this year – it’s notoriously bumpy surface has been completely re-paved and it is expected to be much faster.
