London's £10.9 million car auction
29 October 2009
Vijay Pattni saw a host of classic automotive exotica – and some bonkers Mercs – at the annual Automobiles of London auction in Battersea.
It’s got a 612bhp 6.9-litre V12. It’s got silly upwards opening doors and is wider than your average fat camp attendee.
And last night it sold for a whopping £616,000.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is one of the rarest Mercedes-Benz models in the world: a Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Roadster, which sold at auction alongside its ‘sister’ car, the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Coupe – a snip at just £522,500.
The monster Mercs headlined the third Automobiles of London auction held by RM Auctions at the stunning Battersea Evolution Centre in south London.

You may remember the company. Two years ago its inaugural London event sold off F1 puppet-master Bernie Ecclestone’s lot of exceptional and vintage motors, with his classic 1930s Mercedes-Benz roadster fetching £3.9 million.
And Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans popped along to Maranello last year where RM Auctions kindly sold him the prettiest Ferrari in existence: a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spider for £5.6 million, breaking the world record for a vintage car sold at auction.
Last night was a more sober affair however, with a few surprises in store. A classic 1963 ATS 2500 GT was expected to fetch up to £1,000,000, but went under the hammer for just £280,000, while a stunning 1969 Lamborghini Miura went unsold after failing to hit its reserve.
But there was still lots to entertain the crowd, including a classic 1991 Ferrari Testarossa (pictured above), a 1914 Rolls-Royce which went for £473,000 and a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C which sold for £522,500.
There’s also a bright green 1972 Porsche 911 2.4S and a modified Bentley Mulsanne previously owned by Chris Evans and designed by Andy Saunders…
