Slide show: Australian Motor Show
16 October 2007 This week Sydney is host to the 2007 Australian International Motor Show. Andy Goodwin takes a look at the new releases and concept cars launched down under. Held in the Sydney Exhibition centre, Darling Harbour, the ritzy show has been held since 1911 and attracts over 260,000 visitors. New car launches Undoubtedly the most exciting launch at this year’s show is of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X. The 280bhp rally icon always generates headlines, with its giant-slaying reputation. As the covers came off the 10th generation Evolution the fans were not disappointed by its more contemporary design and embrace of technology. Audi made a song and dance about their new A4 model, unveiling it onto their stand during a live show. The BMW and Mercedes competitor goes on sale here soon with a more modern design than its predecessor, an updated interior and a revised engine line-up. Volkswagen chose Australia to showcase the V10 diesel Touareg R50, capable of 0-60mph in under seven seconds, despite its not inconsiderable size. The current V10 diesel Touareg has already proved it has enough grunt to tow a Jumbo Jet, but this version gets even more thrust. 350bhp and 600lb/ft of pulling power to be precise. The concepts The stunning BMW Gran Turismo CS concept takes BMW in a new style direction. When it’s launched in 2012 it will take the carmaker into battle with hot coupes from Mercedes and Maserati. Hyundai’s Veloster concept is a sleek sports coupe aimed at Generation Y, according to its designers at Hyundai’s Design Centre, South Korea. It has a panoramic glass roof and a ‘pimped’ interior. The Australian International Motor Show is on now and ends October 21st.
