Ten reasons to go to Goodwood
21 June 2007 The world’s greatest racing drivers and the finest race and road cars will descend on Lord March’s estate for three days of petrolhead fun. From Bugatti Veyron-beating supercars to F1 stars, Keith Collantine has the top ten reasons why you can’t miss this weekend.
This year 300 cars and 100 motor racing personalities are set to attend. It all takes place in the grounds of Goodwood – the picturesque residence of Lord March. There are a small number of tickets left – if you’ve not got one yet here’s why you should. Britain’s new F1 star Lewis Hamilton Lewis Hamilton – the new British star of Formula 1 – will be driving his McLaren Mercedes up the famous hill on Sunday. Hamilton makes his first appearance at Goodwood and will be joined by fellow British F1 racers David Coulthard, Jenson Button (in the Honda RA107 ‘Earth Car’) and Anthony Davidson. Goodwood gives fans a rare to chance to get up close and meet the stars of the world’s top motor sport. Koenigsegg CCXR Goodwood always plays host to the world’s hottest cars and this year is no exception. The latest exotic creation from Koenigsegg will make its British debut on the hill. The CCXR is the first of two potential Bugatti Veyron-beaters, with 1,018bhp thanks to its biofuel-powered engine. Caparo T1 The Caparo T1 could be the Veyron’s number one enemy. The ultra-light car packs a whopping 1, 045bhp per tonne and has an estimated 0-60mph time of 2.5 seconds. It’s designed by a roster of ex-McLaren staff including the man behind the McLaren F1 road car, Gordon Murray. The T1 makes its British debut at Goodwood.
Goodwood keep details of its centrepiece attraction a closely guarded secret. But we do know one thing – Toyota’s motor sport display is so huge that a red warning light has to be fitted to the top to alert low flying aircraft. Formula 1 legends The past greats of F1 will also be present, including the famous names that put Britain at the forefront of F1 for decade after decade. Three times champion Sir Jackie Stewart will be joined by Sir John Surtees (the only man ever to win both the F1 title and the world motorbike championship) and 1996 champion Damon Hill. Luxury cars Some of the world’s most expensive cars will be on show at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ display. The headline attraction here is a collection of Bugatti Type 41 Royales – the most valuable car in the world – worth $60m. Scalextric Most petrolheads have had a Scalextric at some point in their lives and the classic toy celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Goodwood plays host to a special Scalextric exhibition this year. Rally action Like your motor sport with a dollop of mud? Check out the forest rallying stage featuring Colin McRae plus Petter Solberg in his Subaru Impreza. There’s also rallying heroes Carlos Sainz, Hannu Mikkola, Stig Blomqvist and more.
Mercedes will be showing off the convertible version of its McLaren roadster for the first time. With 626 bhp it can hit 207 mph. Mercedes reckon 125 mph is the highest speed at which you can have a conversation and hear the other person talk with the roof down. Ford GT Roush 600RE The final version of Ford’s mighty GT will be at Goodwood. Tuned by Roush Technologies it looks stunning in an all-black design. One of only ten 600REs in the world will take to the Goodwood hill. Video
