Six of the best: Saloons

Six of the best: Saloons - News image

Offering space, comfort, practicality and performance – saloons are an ideal choice for families, sales reps and taxi drivers.

And with no shortage of choice, Britain’s market is seriously competitive. Adrian Hearn looks at six of the best.

BMW 3 Series Saloon

The ubiquitous 3-Series is a market leading motor and the most searched for car on AutoTrader.co.uk.

Its good looks, excellent performance, range of engines and reliability make it a serious contender for anyone looking to move into the compact executive market. And with their desirability come strong used values.

Ford Mondeo

It’s no longer Mundano, but Bondeo – the Mondeo is finally cool. After Daniel Craig drove it in Casino Royale everyone wanted to know more about the Blue Oval’s latest family saloon.

It’s a brilliant car with a market-leading spec. Oh, and it’s impossible to put the wrong fuel in thanks to an ingenious nozzle that recognises what’s being put in the tank.

The 2.5T is seriously quick and the 2-litre diesel is fast, frugal and excellent value. Watch out 3-Series, the new boy is coming for you.

Vauxhall Insignia car review - Feature ImageVauxhall Insignia

The replacement for the average but reliable Vectra is a success for Vauxhall.

Good-looking, sporty and with a range of engines offering performance or fuel efficiency, the Insignia is a genuine alternative to the Ford Mondeo for residents of Rep-ville.

In EuroNCAP crash testing, the Insignia was awarded the maximum five stars for adult occupancy, achieving 94 per cent.

Skoda Superb car review - Feature ImageSkoda Superb

Very rarely does a car maker sum up a model perfectly but Skoda hit the nail on the head with the Superb.

With prices starting from £15,660, the Superb boasts BMW build quality and Mercedes class along with a huge range of engines and spec levels.

At the top of the range is a 3.2-litre V6 engine which makes will hit 155mph. Put simply, you can’t get more bang for your buck with the Superb.

Seat Exeo

The Exeo is based on the previous generation Audi A4 but comes with the more enticing Seat price, starting at £17,735.

It drives well and benefits from one of the best saloon interiors built, along with the latest generation TSI petrol and common rail diesel engines.

Handling is good too, with the car able to scythe through bends with more precision than the Audi it’s based on.

Volkswagen Passat

While its looks aren’t exactly pulsating, the sixth-generation Passat is a fairly imposing saloon. It’s bulky and borrows styling from the luxury Phaeton model.

Safety wise, the Passat is excellent and mated with pretty good performance, rock-hard reliability and a good level of comfort, puts it in an enviable position in the competitive market.
