One of the year’s hottest films gets its UK premiere tonight – and Vijay Pattni was at an exclusive screening to give you the lowdown…

There aren’t many places left on the planet which Transformers director Michael Bay hasn’t blown up yet.

Sitting in a posh London hotel at an exclusive press conference, he said he enjoyed making Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – which hits UK cinemas this Friday – but if he made another, it would probably be “darker”.

And he’d have to make it darker, because in his latest Transformers instalment, you get two and a half hours of non-stop light-hearted action.

Oh, and Megan Fox – easily the world’s hottest actress.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which gets its UK premiere tonight in London’s Leicester Square, is a rollercoaster ride of robots rumbling, cityscapes crumbling, and grown men mumbling as Megan Fox literally smoulders on screen.

This time, Sam Witwicky, played by Shia LeBouf, is off to university and has to leave his Transformer friend Bumblebee behind – but disaster is never too far away and after touching the infamous ‘All Spark’ from the first film, he is plagued by strange symbols he cannot decipher.

And this alerts the evil Decepticons into battle, forcing Sam to flee university and embark on a battle of epic proportions, with girlfriend Mikaela (Megan Fox), in tow.

Say it ain’t so

Say whatever you want about a Michael Bay film script (Bad Boys, Armageddon), because it doesn’t get much cheesier than when an Army Sergeant bellows out the obvious, “it’s about to get hotter”.

But what he fails to deliver in good dialogue, he absolutely nails with special effects – put simply, you could make at least five good blockbuster movies using the footage from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Robots have rarely looked more flawless than how they are rendered here, and each magnificent battle sequence is punctuated with thunderous sound effects, amazing animation and some quality fight choreography.

Bay gave us an insight into the battle scenes, which uses more traditional animation techniques than straight ‘green-screen’ CGI.

“The scene near the end of the film with Devastator climbing the Egyptian pyramids – it took one guy six months writing code to make that scene”.

But the epic scenery was actually filmed in Egypt at the fabled pyramids, and goes a long way to explaining why action has rarely looked better.

There are cars – Bumblebee transforms into the famous Chevrolet Camaro alongside other GM and Chevy models, while Audi R8 fans won't be happy – and there’s even a hint of human romance littering the robot-stained battlefields, as Sam and Mikaela’s relationship goes one step further.

“Something romantic had to happen in the film”, explains Megan, “otherwise it’s just non-stop robot violence.

“And the romance on screen is really tame anyway”, she laughs.

Bay – never one to miss a beat, or explosion – gave a typically blunt reply. “It’s because Shia isn’t a good kisser.”

As Shia squirms, Megan calmly replies: “Yes he is”.

We reckon this is easily the best summer blockbuster out so far, and appeals to the 12-year-old inside every one of us. Superb entertainment.
