The simplest, most effective way to cut your fuel bills is to set yourself a weekly limit.

Write down how much you’re currently spending on fuel and which trips you take every day, and avoid short journeys where possible.

If there’s an opportunity to combine two trips into one, this will help your money go further.

Here's an example of a fuel management system:

Ask yourself:

• What’s the best route? Take the most direct path at off-peak hours to save time and money – use a sat-nav to compare routes

• Have I checked my tyres? Under-inflated tyres can reduce your fuel economy by ten per cent – read our tyre pressure tips for more advice

• Do I need to drive? Journeys of less than two miles burn fuel quicker since engines need a higher mixture of fuel when cold – meaning higher fuel bills

• Do I drive alone? Consider car sharing or park and ride schemes – contact your local council for more information

• Am I driving efficiently? Avoid sudden speed changes – brake and accelerate gently. Drive at 60mph instead of 70mph in the left lane on motorways to burn less fuel.
