Money-saving tip: Check your oil - Feature Image
Checking and topping up your car’s oil is no more complicated than filling up your fuel tank – and it should only take one minute

25 July 2008

Three quarters of motorists don’t know what the oil warning light means – or how close they could be to damaging their engine.

To coincide with National Check Your Oil Day, we explain how a quick oil check can prevent a costly breakdown.

Why is it important?

If your oil warning light flashes, you could be dangerously close to causing major damage – and big repair bills.

How often should I check the oil level?

Check your oil once month and before long journeys. Ensure you top up with the correct type of oil for your car – check your vehicle handbook for more details.

What should I do if the oil warning light comes on?

1. Stop the car as soon and as safely as possible, and switch your engine off
2. Park the car on a level surface so the oil rests in the reservoir (or ‘sump’) and wait a few minutes for the engine to cool
3. Check the oil level – remove the dipstick from the reservoir, wipe it with a cloth and replace for a couple of seconds before pulling it out again. The oil level should rest between the minimum and maximum marks
4. If the level is low, top up by twisting off the cap and pouring gently, using a funnel if possible
5. Give the oil a few moments to rest in the sump
6. Restart the engine

If the warning light stays on, switch off the engine and call your breakdown recovery company or a local garage for assistance.

Refer to your vehicle's handbook for more specific advice about your car’s oil and what to do in an emergency.

How do I check my oil level?
