Volkswagen Beetle thrashes Porsche 911

Jeremy Clarkson is forever ridiculing Top Gear co-host Richard Hammond for buying a Porsche 911 – a car Clarkson describes as a Volkswagen Beetle.

But the Top Gear stars would have been amazed this week to hear a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle had out-sprinted a Porsche 911 in quarter-mile drag race.

In a scene which could have been taken right out of Disney’s The Love Bug, the 42-year-old Vee Dub does the quarter-mile in 11.04 seconds, leaving the 911 and its 13.18 second sprint for dead.

But it’s not a typical Beetle. Bournemouth-based Turbo Dynamics fitted it with a turbocharged 2.3-litre engine to give it devastating performance.

Watch as the bonkers Beetle annihilates the Stuttgart-built supercar.
