Alex Eckford puts on his Barry Norman hat to bring you ten of the best road trip films from cinematic history. 1. Duel Steven Spielberg's classic road drama was originally made as a TV movie for CBS in Dennis Weaver stars as David Mann, a computer salesman who offends a truck driver while on a road trip, and wishes he hadn't. Though he never sees the trucker's face, Mann is involved in a terrifying road battle with the psychopathic driver, who forces him into a series of deadly situations. And there's a tarantula in one scene, which is quite exciting. 2. Fear and Loathing in The film version of Hunter S. Thompson's classic psychedelic novel sees Johnny Depp on a road trip across Depp prepared for the film, directed by Terry Gilliam, by spending months with Thompson, and even stole a cigarette filter from him to use in the film. 3. Thelma & Louise Ridley Scott's classic flick sees Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis on the run from the police in a classic '66 Thunderbird, after the decision to break out of their hum-drum lives goes awry. The film sees early appearances from Brad Pitt and Michael Madsen, and one of the greatest endings in film history. I won’t spoil it. It's a cliff hanger. 4. Road Trip One of a number of teen flicks that popped up in the wake of American Pie, Road Trip is a great coming-of-age film with its fair share of body function-related laughs. And yet more proof that you should never let Tom Green near your pets. 'The greatest college tradition of all time' according to the tagline. Personally, my college road trip consisted of a 14-hour hitchhike from Liverpool to Speaking of hitchhiking… 5. The Hitcher 'Never pick up a stranger'. Good advice in this case. Blade Runner and Guinness ad star Rutger Hauer play John Ryder, one of the most evil villains in movie history. Picked up by Jim Halsey (played by C. Thomas Howell), it turns out Ryder is a serial killer intent on murdering his ride. A remake of the film is scheduled for release in 2007. 6. Cars Pixar's latest animated offering features the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Michael Schumacher and our own Jeremy Clarkson. Rookie race car Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson), finds himself in small town Radiator Springs in an unexpected detour on his journey to a race in Possibly the only film in this list that features two cars kissing. 7. Vanishing Point Barry Newman stars as delivery driver Kowalski in this 1971 film. A The film is a big favourite with musical acts, inspiring Primal Scream's 'Kowalski' New Order's 'Vanishing Point', and Apollo 440's, er… 'Vanishing Point'. 8. The Cannonball Run The Cannonball Run sees an all-star cast - Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett, Dom DeLuise, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr (as the brilliantly named Maurice Fenderbaum), Jackie Chan and Peter Fonda - racing from Connecticut to California in a variety of vehicles, including a Dodge Tradesman van and a Lamborghini Countach. The film is a comedy classic, but stick around for the outtakes - they're even funnier. 9. The Blues Brothers The emphasis in this movie is more on music than cars, but we couldn't compile this list without mentioning the Blues Brothers' iconic 1974 Dodge With Animal House director John Landis at the helm, the film features cameo appearances from Ray Charles, Carrie Fisher, Frank Oz and Steven Spielberg. The movie also features the most famous bridge jump in film history. 10. Summer Holiday Before Cliff Richard sang at tennis matches he was a heartthrob film star, taking the lead role in The Young Ones, Wonderful Life and this sunny screen gem. Richard stars as Don (no last name, like Cher and Prince), one of four The film was memorably spoofed in the last ever episode of the TV series The Young Ones. "Look out! Cliff!" |
