The Scrambler represents a fresh take on the iconic bikes from Triumph’s past, adding a completely new twist to the classic range. Combining inspiration from the laid back attitude of sunny California with the practicality of Brit engineers, the Scrambler redefines the off-road machines made famous by 1960s thrill seekers like Steve McQueen and ace stunt man Bud Ekins.
The authentic styling of the Scrambler is what makes the motorcycle unique, yet the technology is modern and for 2008 the bike receives an 865cc fuel injected engine to bring it bang up-to-date with the forthcoming Euro 3 emissions legislations.
The fuel injection system is cleaner running than the carburettor version, runs more smoothly and is easier to fire up from a cold start. The retro styling remains uncompromised as the fuel injectors have been cleverly concealed by throttle bodies designed to look like carburettors.
Peak power of 59bhp arrives at 6,800rpm, with maximum torque of 51ft.lbf available at 4,750rpm, and is fed to the rear wheel via a five-speed gearbox and chain final drive.
Using a strong tubular steel cradle frame and supple front and rear suspension (41mm telescopic forks and twin chromed spring preload-adjustable rear shocks) the Scrambler is built tough, to iron out the bumps. Its high, wide handlebars and high-set footpegs further aid control and low-speed manoeuvrability. The spoked wheels are sized 19 x 2.5in (front) and 17 x 3.5in (rear), both wearing lightly-knobbled tyres. Twin piston calipers are used for both brakes, the front working a single 310mm disc, the rear a 255mm disc.
Very few motorcycles can claim to be unique but the Scrambler, thanks to its authentic styling, is most certainly one of them. The flat seat, small headlight and single, round-faced speedometer mark its difference, likewise the pair of high-level exhaust pipes, each wearing an evocative heat shield.
A range of Factory accessories are available for the Scrambler. They include a bash plate to protect the underneath of the engine, headlamp grille, number boards for the sides, tachometer, handlebar brace and a single seat and rack.
For 2008 the two existing paint schemes – Roulette Green/Aluminium Silver and Tornado Red/Fusion White – are joined by Tangerine/Aluminium Silver. All three underscore its retro appeal.
