What is a cherished number plate?

Cherished number plate is an industry term used to describe 'personalised registration plates' or 'personal car number plates'. That said, the name is an accurate description given the legendary interest in certain letter and number combinations. Many often become cherished!

Auto Trader has teamed up with a number of dealers to provide you with plenty of personalised number plates to choose from. Purchasing a personalised number plate can often seem confusing so we recommend contacting our chosen providers whose friendly staff will be more than happy to explain how to buy a personalised number plate. And remember, it's always best to shop around to ensure you get the best possible deal.

Prefix registrations contain a year identifier at the beginning of a registration number. They consist of a letter, one to three numbers and a space followed by three letters.

For example: A123 ABC or G2 GSD

Current style registrations consist of two letters, a two-figure age identifier and a space followed by three letters

For example: AB11 ABC

Dateless registrations don't contain year identifiers and consist of number combinations followed by letter combinations and vice versa. There is a space between the number and letter groupings.

For example: 1 ABC or ABC 123

Auction plates are registration numbers which are specifically chosen for sale due to their highly distinctive and collectable combinations.

The key restriction is that you cannot make a vehicle look newer than it actually is.

For example you cannot put a 07 registration mark on a registered vehicle originally registered on a 56 plate.

To be sure, we recommend contacting our chosen providers whose friendly staff will be more than happy to explain which restrictions apply to you.
