Customers should be aware of a scam which could affect sellers who include their mobile phone number in their advert.

Sellers have received text messages on their mobile phones from someone posing as a potential buyer. The text message states that they are interested in the vehicle but cannot phone the seller because they are in a bad reception area. The message goes on to ask the seller to ring the buyer back on a premium rate phone number.

Premium rate numbers typically begin with the digits ‘090’ or ‘091’ followed by a further 8 digits. The cost of these calls varies and calls from mobile phones are likely to cost more than calls from landlines.

Most landline numbers in the UK begin with an ‘01’ or ‘02’ and all mobile phone numbers in the UK currently begin with ‘077’ ‘078’ or ‘079.’
